~ the story of my paternal grandparents ~
the comfortable years
Papa's mother passed away December 10, 1962; she had suffered with MS much of
her life. Papa was unable to go to her funeral; he went back and forth on this
decision, but by the time he had decided to attend JY and family had already left
for Texas, so it was too late to make his arrangements.
Nana and Papa became grandparents on May 18th, 1961, when
Arlene was born. 2 years later a grandson Mark was born, and 3 years
after that a final grandchild was born, Diana.
Papa can recall that it was with Arlene, on 7/20/1969, while taking a Sunday drive
around Bodega Bay, that they were listening on the car radio to the broadcasts of the
first landing on the Moon by the United States.
Unfortunately there are really no pictures from the 1960's and 1970's, and fewer stories
still. Papa had numerous reflections on Colorado and working in Vallejo, but he never
had much to say about personal time spent during these years. They had a small camper
which they must have used now and then, and there were some trips to Kim and other places.
But in general it seems their life was fairly uneventful, with Papa working at the School
District, Nana working as a hair dresser, and their Son and three Grandchildren living about
15 miles away in Napa.
