In 2012-2013 we spent one year in Salzburg, Austria. While the (my) goal was language immersion and
quality time with Mimi & Opa, I also had visions of traveling with the girls, but that didn't happen.
Which maybe was OK, as Niki & Britta were only 5 at the time and really too young to appreciate/learn
from any traveling. So within 12 months time we only left Austria - admittedly a very small country,
yet within a 4-5 hour train ride it provides access to so many international destinations - only once,
and that was in April for Annika's spring break vacation when we visited
Croatia with Mimi & Opa.
Flash forward 7 years when we return again to Salzburg for a year. Niki and Britta are 12 now, and I
have visions of traveling more this time around. My hope was that they would not join a ski
team, as that would consume many of their weekends. Certainly traveling in winter is not optimal, with
the colder weather and shorter days, but I knew the 12 months would fly by and so thought that being able to take
advantage of any weekend would be ideal. However, Niki & Britta did end up joining a ski team and
although it seemed unimaginative (essentially living their normal Tahoe-like lifestyle within Europe)
they were super excited about it.
As I was recovering from ACL surgery and so not able to ski at all this winter, I decided to travel
on my own, instead of spending weekends alone in Salzburg while the girls skied. So I bought a 3 month
first class Eurail ticket; the general goal was: travel on a Friday and Monday, working on the train; tour around
Saturday and Sunday. Here is where I (we) did ultimately visit.
